Did you ever get a chance to attend Nagaland Wedding? No, let’s explore its rituals. Usually, the Naga’s follow a strict and exogamic custom of marriage. Physical intimacy is completely prohibited between them. Only the people from Konyak tribe are inviolable, who believe in bringing wife from the same clan. There is a small story about the birth of the sacred tribes. Nikhoga, who was the first man of the Naga tribes had six sons. He found a wife only for his eldest son. An interest and fascination were created amongst all the brothers. Nikhoga was disgusted with this feeling and threw all the other 5 sons’ out of his house, who in turn formed the sacred tribes.

Angamis

A young lad chooses a girl and demands to marry her, to his father, who in turn sends his friend to get an approval to the girl’s parents. On mutual agreement, the groom’s father tests the bride. A fowl is strangled to death, observing how it crosses the legs while dying. If the legs are crossed in unfavourable conditions, the wedding is broken off.If in the next 3 days, the to be bride dreams something inappropriate, the wedding is called off.If all goes well, the wedding is finally fixed.

The rituals begins at the bride’s house with a feast and by evening she proceeds to her husband’s home. Staying in the same house, the couple is not allowed to sleep together, they visit the field on the 3rd day but night separates the duo. The priest of the village calls the couple on the 8th or 9th day, that is when they are allowed for a sexual intimacy.

The Mongsen Tribe

Once the boy and the girl are engaged, they go for a 20-day trading business tour.Without profits in the tour, the engagement is not successful. It is considered a bad sign. Earning profits in business is a good sign, and the wedding is proceeded. The Naga women are very strong and they always keep themselves busy in different fields as per their interest. The girls are pretty, fair, good body dignity but short, their heads are shaved when they reach the marriageable age. This is done so that the girls do not fall for any boy and do not commit any unacceptable act.

The Sema’s Tribe

The girls are kept very carefully; the reason is that a very high price is offered to them for marriages. The amount is reduced if a girl is caught in any inevitable act. The opposite side in this condition has to pay huge fine. The amount depends on the position, the girl’s father hold in the society, and also on the decided amount of the girl’s marriage.

The AO Tribe

Earlier, as the girls reach their teens, were made to sleep in a different house amongst a group of other girls.

These days the Nagaland Weddings are no less than any other Indian Weddings. They have also started following the showbiz system of separate engagement party, bachelors. A huge amount is spent on the decor, the brides and grooms’ dresses. Moreover, the Nagaland Weddings have become a hybrid affair i.e. a mix of their old customs and a bit picked from media influence.
