What is the Roka ceremony?
Once the marriage is fixed the first ritual that will take place in a Punjabi wedding is the Roka ceremony. In this ceremony, the bride’s family will visit the groom’s house. They will bring gifts for the groom. These gifts include dry fruits, sweets, money and other goodies. It is an official way of the bride’s side to declare that they have selected this boy as the groom for their daughter and that they giving him these gifts which mark the beginning of the relationship. The bride will not accompany her parents when they go to the groom’s house.
In response to this, the groom’s side will come to the bride’s house. They will come with gifts like jewelry, sweets, dry fruits and other things. All this is called as the Sagun. This Sagun is given to the bride. The bride and the groom will sit next to each other and they are given ladu to eat. In some families, a pooja is done during the function for the well-being of the couple. The wedding date and other formalities are also fixed during this occasion.
The attire of the bride for the Roka ceremony
Lots of importance is given to the attire of the bride and the groom in a Punjabi wedding. Even during the Roka ceremony, the bride is expected to be dressed in traditional attire. She will normally adorn a bright colored lehenga and choli with a dupatta. She may also opt for a saree or a salwar suit. The colors have to be vibrant and there is no room for black and while during these occasions. She will also wear jewelry like jhumkas, bangles, necklace etc. Some girls also like to adorn the maang tikka and other such traditional jewelry. The bride to be will also put a bindi on her forehead and may also apply henna to her hands.
You will find that no matter how modern the girl is but in Punjabi wedding she will make sure that she wears only traditional attire. The attire is normally made up of silk and will have zari work. Even the dupatta that the bride carries will have heavy zari work and gold embroidery.
Overall you can say that the Punjabi bride is at her traditional best in a wedding. Even in the pre-wedding rituals, she will make sure that she wears only traditional clothes that are colorful and rich in elegance and style. These days many brides appoint a fashion designer for the perfect attire for all the rituals of their wedding.
