Pre-Wedding Rituals of Punjabi Weddings

If you want to see a wedding that is colourful and flamboyant then you must have a look at the Punjabi Wedding ceremonies. They are extravagant and a joyful affair. Not just the main ritual, but even the pre-wedding rituals are very important for Punjabis. You will find that there are a number of pre wedding rituals that these Punjabis have.

Roka Ceremony

Once the wedding is fixed the first pre-wedding ritual that will take place is the Rokka ceremony. In this the bride’s family will visit the groom’s house. They will give gifts to the groom and his family. It is in a way an official announcement that they have finalised the groom for their daughter and that the wedding is now fixed.

Shagun Ceremony

In the pre-wedding ritual of a Punjabi Weddingafter the Roka the shagun ceremony takes place. The groom’s family will visit the bride’s family and they will give the bride gifts like sweets, dry fruits, jewellery clothes etc. The bride and the groom are then made to sit next to each other and they are then fed with sweets.

Chunni Ceremony

In this ritual the groom’s family will go to the bride’s house and will give the bride a red coloured lehenga and choli. They will also give her a red chunni. This chunni is used to cover the head of the bride. The groom’s mother will also give the bride bangles and mehendi. The mehendi is applied to the hands of the bride. The groom’s father will give the bride meva. The bride is given other gifts like sweets etc.

Sagaai

This is the engagement ceremony in Punjabi Wedding. Here the brideand the groom will exchange rings in the presence of close family members and friends. Gifts are exchanged during this occasion as well.

Mehendi Ceremony

In this ceremony mehendi or henna is applied to the brides hand and feet. Other females of the house will also apply mehendi.

Sangeet Ceremony

This is a fun ritual which takes place one day before the wedding. The two families come together and sing and dance.

Kangna Bandhana

In this pre-ritual of Punjabi wedding a sacred thread is tied to the hands of the bride and the groom in their respective homes.

Chooda Chadhana

In this ceremony the mama of the bride will put 21 red/maroon and white/ivory in color bangles in the hands of the bride.

Kalide Ceremeony

Once the bride wears the chooda her sisters will put umbrella shaped ornaments called kalide on the bride;s chooda.

Haldi Ceremony

In this ceremony the bride is made to sit in front of diyas and a paste opf turmeric, sandalwood, rosewater and mustard oil are applied to her. A similar function will take place at the groom’s house as well.

Summer Time

For the warm weather, the couple can choose soft colors like pink, white and orange for a lighthearted vibe.

Sehra Bandhna

On the wedding day a sehra or a veil made from flowers is tied on the forehead of the groom in order to cover his face.These are some of the pre-wedding rituals that are a part of Punjabi culture.
