Well, definitely the soon-to-be-grooms also need to practice many numbers of traditions. But, the fact that the bride will leave her maternal home forever and should be welcomed to the grooms’ abode, ensures that many more blessings and affection is showered in the form of traditions.
The Assamese Wedding is known for one such ritual. The ritual of Juroon is an epitome of the bridal shower. This ritual is performed 2 days before to the marriage.These rituals in Assamese Wedding are really beautiful which reflects sobriety.
So, this ceremony starts at the grooms’ abode itself. The mother of the groom arranges the wedding attire for her soon-to-be-daughter-in-law. It consists of a 2 piece sari known as Mekhela saador. Then, there are a variety of bridal wear which are always in odd numbers. The intricate and gorgeous jewelry sets also make a place in the arrangement. And, of course, there is the makeup kit. All of these are packed well in an ornate manner. Each of these items is touched by the groom before being given to the bride. The groom does not attend the ceremony of Juroon.
The mother of the groom accompanied by the female relatives of the family embarks to the home of the bride. She is welcomed with affection by the family of the bride. Then, the entire company is served refreshment
After this, as a part of the Assamese Wedding, the bride is escorted by her friends to the place, where all women are seated. The mother of the groom with blessings, gifts her entire the packed gifts. The bride is required to keep a beetle nut on her head. On it, the mother of the groom pours a little oil. This is continued for three times. Post this; she puts sindoor to the hair partition of the bride. Then, she is gifted with fish, curd, rice filled in 2 earthen ports and coconuts. She is required to touch each of these symbolizing their acceptance. After this, the bride is made to look in the mirror.
She then seeks blessings of all the elder members of the family of the groom. Each of the relatives presents her with cash or jewelry. And, the best part is not over yet. The mother of the bride is also gifted with clothes, to show her respect for upbringing the bride. This is followed by a scrumptious lunch.
