The Christian marriage act is different in India from the other marriage acts. The Christian marriage registration is performed under the 1872 Indian Christian marriage act. The priest of church performs the marriage and presents the marriage certificate.

Marriage Performed by Priest

The couple looking for marriage registration must be married. In a church, the process of the wedding must be carried by a priest or minister of the church. Then, the couple becomes eligible for registering their marriage under Christian marriage registration act.

Marriage Process

When the marriage is to be performed under the act, the couple has to get married as per the rules and rituals by the priest or minister. Two witnesses are necessary and after 2 months period, the notice gets issued to make the marriage official. The timings are morning 6 to evening 7 and are performed strictly as per the rules.

The Requirements for Indian Christian Marriage Registration

When a couple is looking for registration under Christian marriage act, both the husband and the wife must be Christians. The age for the groom and bride must be 21 and 18 or above. Also, the marriage must be performed in the attendance of two witnesses who can grant the marriage certificate.

Pledge in Front of Register

Before the notice gets issued, one of the party’s must be present in front of the registrar and pledge certain things which include:
• There are no issues and obstacles in the marriage
• The permanent residence is near the registrar’s office
• When either bride or groom is a minor, the father or guardian of that personmust give consent for the marriage

Issuing the Certificate of Notice

When the pledge is taken and 4 days have passed after the receipt of the notice, the registrar gets the power to issue the notice. After verifying all the documents and pictures, the notice is issued.

Marriage Registration

To get the marriage registered, it is necessary for both the bride and groom to sign the application form. With the application, two wedding pictures, wedding invitation pictures, address and identity proofs of the bride and groom should be provided. Also, the marriage has to be registered at the registrar’s office nearby the permanent residence of bride or groom.The registrar provides an acknowledgment slip to the couple and is signed by both the parties, registrar and the witnesses and is filed in the marriage register as a proof. Later, the slips related to proofs of birth and marriagesare submitted to the registrar within a time span of 1 month. This is a very simple and quick process for registering marriage!
