According to Hindu Law, two persons are considered married only if all the shashtric ceremonies are complied with and tying of mangalsutra is one of the most sacred customs and must for the valid solemnization of a Hindu Marriage. A mangalsutra is a sacred thread with black and gold beads woven around it, however, nowadays it’s generally a gold chain with a diamond or a gold pendant. Without this piece of thread, no Hindu marriage is complete as it is not just a piece of jewelry, instead, it denotes the divine and most precious bond of a wife and her husband.

Although in today’s times, the meaning of both the institution of marriage and its vows have changed, but the significance of mangalsutra has remained intact. This article talks about the importance of mangalsutra in Indian weddings and why it needs to be worn by every Hindu married woman.

Significance of Mangalsutra :

The word ‘Mangalsutra’ is derived from the words ‘Mangal’ which mean auspicious and ‘Sutra’ which means a thread, literally meaning the auspicious thread. On the auspicious day of the wedding, it is tied around the neck of the bride by the groom during the solemnization of the rituals. Traditionally, mangalsutra has to be tied in three knots, each of them signifying the important aspects of married life. The first knot denotes- the loyalty of a wife to her husband, the second knot tells about the dedication to the new family and the third talks about the devotion to the God.

What does it Symbolize? :

A mangalsutra carries immense importance in Indian Weddings as well as in the lives of Hindu married women. It symbolizes their eternal union as soul mates until death does them part. It has to be worn by a wife as affectionate authentication of a marriage and commitment between the two partners. A wife wears it until her husband’s death.Every bead in the mangalsutra is believed to contain divine powers to protect the sanctity of marriage and of the married couple. It is also believed that it acts as a shield for the husband by safeguarding him from the danger and ill fate. Breaking this divine thread is considered to be highly unfortunate.

Mangalsutra in Today’s Times :

In today’s times where the meaning of marriage, relations, and customs has changed, the value of mangalsutra also seems to have been considered lost. For today’s couples, it is more of a piece of a fashion jewelry which is worn only during some traditional events. However, the meaning of Mangalsutra has remained pristine and consistent through the years and we see that the women still value it higher than all other jewelry pieces. Therefore, we can say that there is a huge change in the cultural mindset of the people.
