Just like the marriages in different states of India. The Himachali marriage is one of the most simple and yet fun-filled weddings of the Indian culture.
The marriage meeting :
The Himachali marriage is fixed when the Dhamu or matchmaker confirms the status of the families and declares the marriage. Once the ideal match is found, the families of bride and groom arrange a meeting. In this ritual, the family of the groom is welcomed to the bride’s home with beautiful music and sweets. The family and the groom are served with tea. Both the families exchange rice wine also known as ‘channg’ in the local language. The marriage date is fixed with the agreement of both the families.
Jooth Pana :
In Himachal, the wedding is performed twice. The first marriage is also known as ‘Jootha pana’ is a very interesting ritual. In this ritual, the groom’s family visits the bride’s home carrying a jiggery. This jiggery is broken in the name of the bride. The jiggery is then distributed to all the visitors and family members of the groom. This is for confirming the marriage. This is the first marriage ceremony which is performed when the girl is generally a minor.
The wedding ceremony :
Here comes the actual wedding ceremony. This ceremony takes place when the girl is no more a minor. This is the most fun-filled ceremony of the Himachali marriage. The groom and his family are welcomed to the venue with music, cheers, and sweets. The groom is generally dressed in ‘Dhoti’ while the bride shines in a suit and ‘Ghari’ (a traditional wedding outfit in Himachal). The wedding takes place and the couple takes the blessings of the family members.
The silver rupee exchange :
This is a very interesting ritual during the wedding ceremony. In this ritual, the younger brother of groom gives a silver rupee to the bride’s mother. This rupee is a token or right of the brother of the bride as the second husband. Not more than two brothers can marry the bride in any condition.
Pair Bandai :
This is a very interesting ritual in which, the bride is welcomed in the groom’s house and touches the feet of family members. This is a warm welcome and introduction of the bride to the groom’s family. Family members then, give away gifts and blessings to the bride.
These are some interesting and fun-filled wedding rituals which take place during a wedding in Himachal Pradesh. The rituals and customs make the wedding ceremony more interesting and memorable for the couple forever!
