Touching our elderly’s feet has been the most seen and performed gesture that symbolizes our respect for the aged of our families. The ‘Charan Sparsh’ tradition dates back to the Vedic time period from where it was first adopted. Back in time, not just the married, but children from a very small age were also taught to touch every elder’s feet that include both the parents, as well as grandparents, too.

But there is a great history and science behind touching the feet than merely an act of respect. Discover what has kept the modernization of today’s world at bay from jeopardizing the ancient ritual of touching elderly’s feet.

Balancing of energy :

According to the medical sciences, a human body contains a network of both, positive and negative energy in the form of currents of electricity. The left side of our bodies is said to be carrying negative current while the right has the positive current. Thus, the two halves together complete a circuit built of positive and negative energies. Since, we cross our hands while touching the feet of another person, the positive of our body is touched by the positive of theirs, and similarly the negative. This makes up a well-unified circuit of energies channeling between two individuals.

The touch of energy :

It is not an unknown fact that nerves emerging out of our brain are scattered everywhere in our bodies, from head to toe. These nerves end at our fingertips of both hands and feet. So, when you touch the opposite fingertips of the elderly person by your own fingertips of hands, the energies between the two bodies are connected for a brief moment. The fingers and the palm become a receptor of the energy and feet as the giver. Thus the energy in the universe is continuously passed on like this.

As an act of sheer respect :

A human is possessed by its immense power for its ability to control anything and everything. But not every human has been able to do so, and egos become larger than good vibes. Thus, when a person bows down to touch the feet of his elder family member, he keeps aside his ego and grudges. The elder accepts this act of reduced ego as a dedication towards his upbringing. This makes the hearts of elders emit good vibes and positive energy that reaches to you through the touch of you on their body. This is also known as Karuna that reaches you as you touch their feet.

The Universe :

The world believes and works on energy. We are often told that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it is only passed on or changes the form. We can also say that a part of this cosmic energy is released while we touch our elder’s feet. This happens when we touch their feet out of gratitude and respect and connect our minds and souls. It is also believed that if you touch the feet of a good and pure soul, the energy could guide you towards the perpetual light. You will get towards the right paths in your life and the perpetual light will keep shining above your heads.

All the above-mentioned reasons beautifully explain how scientifically as well as culturally relevant it is for a newlywed couple to touch their elders’ feet.
