The Manipuri wedding ceremonies are attached to the roots of Manipuri traditions while the weddings are also lavish! You can get a beautiful combination of tradition and modern celebrations for weddings in the Manipuri weddings!

The Matchmaking

The Manipuri weddings rituals are same as the other Indian weddings. The family of the groom visits the bride’s home and fixes the marriage date. This ritual is known as hinaba in the Manipuri customs. The matchmaking is done after considering the horoscopes by the priest.

The engagement ceremony

The engagement is the next step in the Manipuri weddings. The groom and bride along with their family members and guest arrive at the venue and the engagement ceremony is performed which is also known as heijapot. Also, some gifts, jewelry, clothes, dry fruits, sweets etc are given to the bride. In some tribes, the bride and groom are not allowed to attend this ceremony as the couple cannot see each other before the wedding. Thus, this ceremony is performed during the presence of the family members.

The garland making:

Just like all the other Indian weddings, the groom and bride exchange garlands during the wedding. The garlands in Manipuri weddings are prepared by the bride herself. This is a ritual which is known as leilenga in which, the bride selects the flowers and prepares the wedding garland on her own. While preparing the garland, the bride gets some alone time to think about her upcoming marriage rituals, the roles, and responsibilities she will have to play after the marriage. This is a very special moment for the bride where she is just waiting for the big change in her life to happen.

The beautiful dress and the wedding

The wedding dress of Manipuri brides is inspired by the ‘Radha Krishna’ dance known as ‘rasleela’. The bride gets dressed in a beautiful skirt, dupatta, a blouse and jewelry which are the traditional dress of Manipuri brides. The wedding ceremony happens at the house of the bride which is also known as the luhongba ceremony. The ceremony starts when the groom is welcomed with flowers and the seating is made around the pious Tulsi plant. The priests enchant the mantras and the wedding ceremony takes place.

This is one of the beautiful marriage rituals which are enhanced by the beautiful music in the background, the smiles of the guests and couple and with the cheers of celebrations! It is purely an event of happiness and fun!
